Open Trial 2008

The above picture was taken at the Moray Firth Spaniel & Retriever Club 12 Dog Open Stake. The trial was held at Lochindorb on Thursday 14th August 2008 and was won by our Vice Chairman John MacColl with his dog Goldie of Teith from Yellowbrook.
A FIRST FOR THE MORAY FIRTH
What a wonderful opportunity was afforded to the Moray Firth Spaniel and Retriever Club when it was invited to hold a One Day Open stake on the grouse moor at Lochindorb Estate Grantown-on-Spey by kind permission of Mr Alistair Laing on 14th August 2008. This was the first open stake to be held on grouse in Scotland for many years.
The venue was nothing short of magnificent. The heather was in full bloom, the sun shining and a light breeze which kept everyone cool as the line moved off uphill. Head Keeper David Taylor marshalled the line of eight guns and very soon the dogs were called into action. Rabbits bolted, coveys of grouse were soon in evidence, and snipe and blue hares moved freely from banks of rushes.
Judges on the right were Hugh Paterson and Mrs Sue Hutton while Tom West and Robin Watson were on the left.
As game was coming to hand through excellent shooting, most dogs were performing well and scent was obviously good. A wood pigeon crossed the moor and was shot in classic fashion by keeper David Taylor wide on the right hand side of the line. It fell about 80 yards behind in juniper bushes and Craighorn Pete handled by Charles Halliday made an excellent job of the retrieve. The standard of dog work was proving to be very high.
A covey of grouse rose about the middle of the line and flew forward. Four grouse were shot Three were picked quickly and stylishly by the competing dogs. However as Heather Bradley tried on the last grouse her dog Garrethall Moss of Heathergaye found and flushed three other coveys and three single grouse all in the same area as the shot birds. The dog showed tremendous style and steadiness but unfortunately failed to find the shot bird. The fourth grouse was eventually found by the judges as it fluttered from a ditch.
John McCall handling Goldie of Teith from Yellowbrook had earlier staked a claim when the dog made a brilliant job of marking a snipe shot 60 yards off to the right in heavy rushes. Very soon thereafter two snipe were shot about 30 yards out from the centre of the line by Head Keeper David Taylor. Both snipe fell close together, judges Tom West and Robin Watson tried the dogs from the left hand end. The first dog tried failed to find either snipe and was called up.
John McCall then sent his dog and made the job look very easy picking one of the snipe. The judges on the right then tried two dogs both of which failed to find. John McCall was asked to pick the second snipe and again did so with ease. He was in a very strong position as this only left himself and Stewart Dunn handling Olivertash Kia in contention.
David Taylor turned the line for home as the sun rose to mid-day.
Almost immediately two grouse flushed from the heather in front as rabbits scurried off to the left. One grouse was shot and fell on the edge of a patch of purple heather about 60 yards out. The other flew on, Stewart Dunn tried but unfortunately his dog had marked the unshot grouse away and after a short hunt he was called up. John McCall was then given the chance and again made a first class job of the retrieve and won the trial in style.
Thanks must go the host, the head-keeper and the guns for a wonderful days sport. The chairman and secretary of the Moray Firth Spaniel and Retriever Club must also be congratulated for the efforts they have put in to obtain such wonderful ground for their membership. Rabbits, snipe, grouse, pigeon and blue hares made up the bag for trial . What a memorable trial!
